What is a Graduate Assistantship?
Mount St. Mary's University offers highly competitive graduate assistantships to provide an opportunity for graduate students to further their knowledge in both academic and professional fields through involvement in different areas of the University.The graduate assistantship is designed to provide a meaningful learning experience. Students who are awarded graduate assistantships may be working in areas such as research, student support, program support, teaching support, administration support, departmental aid, etc.
There are various graduate assistantships offered throughout the university. Positions offer an opportunity to work with faculty and administrative departments. While most Graduate Assistantships are offered for two years on a renewable one-year appointment, working 20 hours per week from August – May, there are a few appointments scheduled 15 hours per week from July - June.
The graduate assistantship application is by invitation only for students who have been admitted into a graduate degree program, completed the enrollment decision form and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Who qualifies for an invitation to apply?
The graduate assistantship application is by invitation only for students who have all of the following;- An undergraduate career total GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Acceptance into a Mount St. Mary's University graduate degree program. *
- Completion of the Enrollment Decision Form.
International students can qualify for an invitation, however if an international student becomes eligible to receive a graduate assistantship award it cannot be applied towards their financial affidavit.
What is the compensation?
Compensation for graduate assistantship consists of tuition remission and an annual stipend. All students awarded graduate assistantships will receive an annual $6000 stipend for a maximum of 2 years. Tuition remission for awarded students will be determined by the total number of credits required in the awardee’s program.- 36-39 credit graduate programs receive 12 graduate level credits per contract year for a maximum of 2 years.
- 40 + credit graduate programs receive 18 graduate level credits per contract year for a maximum of 2 years.

February 28 | Enrollment Decision Form due |
March 1 | Graduate Assistantship application due |
March 5 | Panel review |
March 15 | Decision letters released |
April 15 | Hiring process/role assignments begins |
August 15 | Contracts begin |
